At some point in time or another everyone struggles with OCD intrusive thoughts. It’s when these thoughts take over all the time that it can become an issue.
Intrusive thoughts are thoughts that aren’t wanted or welcome in the mind. They quickly become an obsession and take over the entire mental process becoming distressing and difficult to rid oneself of.
These thoughts or images are inappropriate, all-consuming or hijack the thought process of an otherwise great mind. They may be sexual, blasphemous or simply annoying. Regardless, they are difficult to manage.
A lot of people have a day here and there with such issues or they may have a few moments in an otherwise ordinary day that they deal with such things. However, for some people, this form of OCD is so consuming that they can’t think of anything but that image or thought.
It’s normal for the mind to do this under stress such as during exams for a college student, just before a huge event like a graduation or wedding, however, when these thoughts overrule everything, then they become an issue, a huge issue.
Someone with OCD can’t focus on anything except said thought or image. These obsessions may become so severe that the person is rendered helpless to stop them. They can’t function and they may even act out in aggression or fantasy to rid themselves of such thoughts.
These thoughts can become violent or cause other disturbances. It’s how a person chooses to deal with such situations that determine whether or not they are dealing with OCD, anxiety or a normal everyday occurrence.
With proper treatment, such OCD patients can lead a normal life. They can learn to resist the urge to act out upon such thoughts and images. These compulsions can be controlled, but, only if the person seeks treatment options.
Many people fail to recognize that they even have an issue. They think that everyone struggles with such issues. While this couldn’t be further from the truth, there may be no convincing such a person that they are the exception to the rule.
When such persons try to suppress such thoughts, they find that it makes the situation worse. They begin to fantasize about acting out the situation.
However, with proper medication people can learn to control such thoughts and images and recognize that they are a fantasy and won’t have to be acted upon.
The actual thoughts themselves don’t make a person evil, it’s when the person chooses to act upon said thoughts or images that the serious issues begin to arise.
The actual number of patients that choose to act upon such thoughts or images is very low. Most people are able to recognize the legitimacy of such situations and are able to control themselves.
For those few who aren’t able to control themselves, professional help is available if they seek it out. For those who have OCD Intrusive Thoughts and feel no remorse or shame, more help may be required.
